CarGenie Privacy Policy

CarGenie General Partnership, operating as CarGenie (“CarGenie,” “we,” “our,” or “us”), is committed to protecting personal information.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you use:

  • CarGenie’s website;
  • CarGenie’s vehicle-matching quiz;
  • CarGenie experiences embedded on participating dealership websites; and
  • related CarGenie services.

The information collected may differ depending on which CarGenie experience you use.

1. Information We Collect

A. Quiz and Vehicle Preference Information

When you complete a CarGenie quiz, we may collect information about your vehicle needs and preferences, including things such as:

  • passenger capacity;
  • cargo requirements;
  • towing or off-road needs;
  • driving and ride preferences;
  • fuel efficiency preferences;
  • safety and vehicle feature preferences;
  • powertrain preferences;
  • vehicle style;
  • brand preferences;
  • budget or monthly payment preferences;
  • purchase timeline; and
  • other information you provide through the quiz.

We use this information primarily to generate and improve vehicle recommendations.

B. Contact Information

Some CarGenie experiences, particularly those provided through participating dealership websites, may ask for:

  • first name;
  • last name;
  • email address; and
  • phone number.

The standard CarGenie consumer quiz may not require this information in every case.

C. Finance-Related Information

Certain dealership versions of CarGenie may ask for limited, self-reported finance-related information, such as:

  • monthly payment comfort; and
  • a general self-reported credit range.

This information may be used to provide relevant context for vehicle recommendations and dealership follow-up.

Unless clearly disclosed otherwise, CarGenie does not use the standard quiz to:

  • obtain your credit report;
  • obtain your formal credit score from a credit bureau;
  • make a credit decision;
  • approve or deny financing; or
  • complete a formal credit application.

We intentionally limit the finance-related information collected through the standard CarGenie experience.

D. Location Information

CarGenie may collect or infer approximate location information to provide more relevant vehicle results. This may include:

  • city;
  • region, province, or state;
  • country;
  • postal or ZIP code area; or
  • approximate location derived from an IP address.

We may use third-party location technology providers, including MaxMind, to estimate general location from an IP address.

IP-based location information is approximate and may not always be accurate. Where available, you may enter or correct your location manually.

E. Technical and Usage Information

When you use CarGenie, we may automatically receive certain technical or usage information, such as:

  • IP address;
  • browser or device information;
  • pages or experiences viewed;
  • quiz starts and completions;
  • answers or steps completed;
  • interaction and drop-off information;
  • vehicle recommendations displayed;
  • links or vehicle detail pages clicked; and
  • other information about how CarGenie is used.

This information helps us operate, secure, analyze, and improve the service.

2. How We Use Information

We may use information collected through CarGenie to:

  • provide vehicle recommendations;
  • personalize quiz results;
  • match shoppers with relevant dealership inventory;
  • display vehicle detail pages and dealership inventory;
  • email requested vehicle matches or quiz results;
  • create and deliver dealership leads where applicable;
  • provide dealerships with relevant shopper context;
  • respond to questions or support requests;
  • understand how users interact with CarGenie;
  • measure quiz completion, lead conversion, and vehicle engagement;
  • improve our recommendations, products, and user experience;
  • detect, investigate, or prevent fraud, misuse, or security incidents;
  • comply with legal obligations; and
  • carry out other purposes disclosed to you at the time information is collected.

We limit our collection and use of personal information to purposes that are reasonably connected to providing, improving, securing, and evaluating the CarGenie service.

3. Dealership Versions of CarGenie

CarGenie may be embedded directly on a participating dealership’s website. When you use a dealership version of CarGenie and provide contact information, CarGenie may share your information with that specific dealership so it can follow up with you.

Information shared may include:

  • your name;
  • email address;
  • phone number;
  • vehicle preferences;
  • quiz responses;
  • monthly payment preference;
  • self-reported credit range;
  • purchase timeline;
  • vehicles recommended to you; and
  • relevant interaction or lead-source information.

The purpose of this sharing is to allow the dealership to assist with your vehicle search, discuss relevant inventory, and, where applicable, discuss financing options.

The dealership may store and use the information it receives within its own systems and under its own privacy practices.

4. Automotive Partners

When you use CarGenie directly, we may also work with participating automotive partners, including dealerships, to help connect shoppers with relevant inventory, vehicles, or offers.

Where personal information or identifiable quiz information will be provided to a partner, we will disclose the purpose of that sharing and seek consent where required.

We do not require you to consent to unrelated uses of personal information as a condition of receiving the basic CarGenie service.

5. Service Providers

CarGenie may use third-party companies to help operate the service. These providers may assist with functions such as:

  • website and application hosting;
  • infrastructure and databases;
  • email delivery;
  • analytics;
  • location estimation;
  • security;
  • communications;
  • dealership integrations; and
  • other technical services.

Service providers are permitted to access personal information only as necessary to perform services for CarGenie and are expected to handle information in accordance with applicable contractual and legal obligations.

6. Communications

We may use your contact information to send communications that are necessary to provide something you requested, such as:

  • quiz results;
  • vehicle matches;
  • service-related messages; or
  • responses to your inquiries.

If you submit a lead through a participating dealership version of CarGenie, the dealership may contact you regarding your vehicle search or financing interests.

Where required by law, we will obtain the appropriate consent before sending promotional or marketing emails or text messages.

Marketing communications will include an available method to unsubscribe where required.

7. Consent

We seek consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information where required by applicable privacy law.

The form of consent may depend on:

  • the information involved;
  • how sensitive it is;
  • why it is being collected; and
  • how it will be used or shared.

Where a dealership version collects contact or finance-related information, we may provide additional notice at the point of collection explaining:

  • what information is being collected;
  • why it is being collected; and
  • which dealership will receive it.

You may withdraw consent to certain uses of your information, subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may affect our ability to provide certain features or services.

8. Retention of Personal Information

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary to:

  • provide the services for which it was collected;
  • maintain appropriate business and transaction records;
  • meet legal or regulatory requirements;
  • resolve disputes;
  • prevent fraud or misuse; and
  • protect CarGenie’s legitimate business interests.

When personal information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete, destroy, or de-identify it in accordance with our retention practices.

9. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against:

  • loss;
  • theft;
  • unauthorized access;
  • unauthorized disclosure;
  • unauthorized copying;
  • unauthorized use; and
  • unauthorized modification.

The safeguards used depend on the sensitivity, amount, format, and use of the information.

No internet-based system can be guaranteed to be completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect personal information under our control.

10. Your Privacy Rights

Subject to applicable law, you may request:

  • access to personal information CarGenie holds about you;
  • information about how your personal information has been used or disclosed;
  • correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal information; or
  • deletion of personal information where applicable.

You may also withdraw consent to certain uses or disclosures, subject to applicable legal or contractual restrictions.

11. Information Held by Dealerships

When personal information has been provided to a participating dealership, that dealership may maintain its own copy of the information.

A request concerning information held directly by the dealership may need to be made to the dealership itself.

CarGenie remains responsible for personal information under CarGenie’s control.

12. Minors

CarGenie is intended for individuals who are at least 18 years old.

We do not knowingly collect personal information through the service from individuals under 18.

If we learn that personal information has been collected from a minor contrary to this policy, we will take reasonable steps to address it.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as CarGenie’s services and privacy practices change.

The most current version will be posted on our website with the updated effective date.

If we make a material change involving a new use or disclosure of personal information, we will provide additional notice or obtain consent where required by law.
